What is Internal Family Systems Therapy or IFS?

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is an approach to counseling that has evolved over the past few decades. It was developed by Richard Schwarz Ph.D.

How Does Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) work?

The basic theory behind Internal Family Systems Therapy is that most of our problems are caused by conflicts or imbalances between parts of our personality. Rather than viewing our psyches as unitary, IFS sees our personality as consisting of a variety of sub-personalities or parts. This way of describing the psyche has sprung from a rich tradition that includes the likes of such luminaries as Carl Jung and Fritz Perls.

This IFS viewpoint is also part of our everyday understanding. We commonly say things like "part of me wants to get in quit my job right now, but another part of me is scared to do that" or "part of me wants to get in better shape, but another part would die for an extra piece of cake".

Internal Family Systems Therapy works by helping you to get better aquainted with parts of you that are being squelched, and by helping you to to gain greater separation between you and the parts of you that are habitually too active. This is accomplished through an integrative, mind body appoach to therapy.

Who is Internal Family Therapy Therapy (IFS) best for?

IFS Therapy can be very helpful for many types of people.  It tends to be most appealing to people who enjoy doing learning about themselvs and appreciate the value of deep pscyhotherapy. Clients who have meditation practices, yoga practices or clients who value more expertiential forms of therapy tend to really love this approach.
